Training
Training is a vital method of embedding inclusion in your organisation. It has the power to shift mindsets, expand understanding, and stimulate increased commitment to inclusion.
My training is designed and delivered with key principles in mind:
-
An unfortunate truth: maintaining engagement is hard work when a training session is boring.
So here's how I avoid that problem:
Gentle challenge and intellectual stimulation
Group work and discussions to enable the sharing of ideas
Games and activities to reinforce key learnings
Embracing and accommodating different learning styles
Questions welcomed throughout, with additional dedicated question time at the end of each session
Engaging and enthusiastic delivery style
-
My training is evidence-based and well researched to increase its usefulness and credibility.
During my sessions we'll explore the latest information from:
Scientific journals
Reports and studies
Case law and legislation
Official data sources
Industry-relevant thought leadership
I use my academic background to translate complex concepts into accessible language. This ensures that nobody gets confused or overwhelmed, and that my sessions are suitable for every knowledge and experience level.
-
Psychological safety is the foundation of a productive and supportive learning environment. To establish and maintain it:
Every session begins with a group agreement to establish expectations of respect, bravery, engagement, and kindness
I lead by example, sharing my own vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and challenges to encourage bravery and self-reflection
I never promise a 'safe space'. A truly safe space cannot exist when safety means different (often conflicting) things to different people – and I don't make promises I can't keep
Instead, I promise a 'safer space', and a brave space, where...
Openness and honesty is welcomed
Everyone has the chance to ask their questions (no matter how clumsy their phrasing may be)
We challenge the idea, and not the person
Nobody is expected to be perfect
-
Impact is everything. Without impact, we are wasting our precious time and energy – you will find no tick-box exercises here!
I am committed to ensuring that my work makes a difference, through
Distributing pre- and post-session surveys to track changes in knowledge and confidence levels before and after the session
Openly sharing feedback reports with you to help determine your return on investment and identify any future work needed
Offering a follow-up meeting 3 months after the training session to confirm that improvements have been maintained over time
Providing summary handouts and resources following each session, so that learning can continue outside of the training room
To demonstrate my commitment to achieving real impact, all of these measures are offered to you free of charge.
Whether you’re looking for something introductory or something more advanced, please see below for my session topics, and remember - I also offer bespoke services.

A feeling of psychological safety enables us to voice our thoughts without fear of humiliation or punishment – a fundamental necessity for building innovative, high performing teams with low levels of conflict. It’s also a necessity for building cultures of inclusion. Without psychological safety, we are unable to share our experiences, ideas, or concerns, limiting our opportunities for improvement. This session explores what makes us feel safe, and how we can put those principles into action.
Suggested session length: 2 hours

This advanced session builds on Introduction to Allyship, equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to be more effective advocates for people experiencing multiple forms of marginalisation at the same time. Through understanding intersectionality, the difference between effective and ineffective allyship, and social power imbalances in a more nuanced way, we are able to tailor our allyship to ensure nobody is left behind.

“Reasonable adjustments”, a legal term under the UK Equality Act 2010, are changes an employer must make to accommodate a disabled person's needs, and to remove or reduce the disadvantages and barriers compared to non-disabled people. So what counts as “reasonable”? What barriers might your employees be facing? And how can we have conversations about accessibility without any awkwardness? This session explores best practice surrounding workplace adjustments, giving managers the knowledge and confidence to support staff efficiently and effectively.
Suggested webinar length: 1 hour

Testimonial
“I’ve never had more thoughtful, grounded and genuinely helpful D&I training than I have with Jo. Their sessions are inclusive, always rooted in lived experience and anything but a tick-box exercise. Jo helped me to really understand the nuances of complex topics and I still think about a lot of the anecdotes and pieces of advice they shared over a year on. Jo’s passion and expertise are unmatched, and I would 100% recommend them for your D&I strategy and training.”
